Listen to the track and answer the questions:

1. What university is the speaker from?

2. What does she say about the brain’s ability to perform complex vs easy tasks?

3. What facts about ants did she mention?

  1. 1)The speaker is from Portland State university.
2)Almost all of the big problems, that we're dealing with now in the world have to do with complexity. So the economic crisis is one example. The the economy is becoming a very complex system in that it consists of very large numbers of individual entities, be they individual people buying and selling things or corporations.Giant banks and all these things are connected to one another and interacting in different ways. And yet, out of this whole mass of activity, we get phenomena that are very difficult to predict and understand, such as our more most recent financial crisis, worldwide financial crisis. And so people are trying to use the tools of complex systems research to address some of these extremely complex systems that are really essential. Understanding them is absolutely essential for solving the kinds of problems we're facing today.
3)There are complex system. Can you talk about that? Sure. So each in an Ant colony, each individual Ant is a very simple entity, can't do much on its own. But together with within its colony, these these Ant colonies can perform very surprising and complicated tasks. One example I have in the book is how ants can work together to build say a bridge from one tree to another using their bodies, and ants can crawl from one tree to the other and so it's action of the whole colony together where no individuals really aware that a large scale of what the whole colony is doing. So that's a great example of complex behavior from simple components.

    2) Almost all the big problems we face in the world right now are related to complexity. The economy is becoming a very complex system because it consists of a very large number of individual entities, whether they are individuals buying and selling things or corporations. People are trying to use complex systems research tools to solve some of these extremely complex systems that are really necessary.
3)Everyone in an ant colony, each individual ant is a very simple entity, it can do little by itself. But together with their colony, these ant colonies can perform very amazing and complex tasks. Ants can work together to build a bridge from one tree to another using their bodies, and thus it is the action of the whole colony together, where no one person really realizes that the large scale of what the whole colony is doing.

3)Ants alone cannot perform any difficult tasks but if they form colonies thanks to these colonies they can perform very difficult and various tasks that cannot be performed.

  4. 1. The speaker Melanie Mitchell is a professor of computer sciences from the Portland University.
    2. They try to model brain like things on computer and understand, how they might get intelligent behaviour from these models. The computers can play chess at the level of grand masters and drive a car on crowaded ways and don't crush. But they can't recognise pictures of dogs versus pictures of cats, and any two years old child can do these simple for human brain things.
    3. Each in the ant colony, each individual ant is very simple entity. But they make a colony together, and together they can perform complicated and surprising tasks. They can build a bridge from one tree ro another using their bodies. A ant is not an individual, but makes up an entire colony, a collective mind.

    3. Ant colonies are different and very simple creatures. However, they can colonize each other and perform complex and amazing tasks together. They can use their body to build bridges from tree to tree. And these are not individual people, they make up a whole colony, a collective mind.
