I didn't even realize that Maugham , a writer that many people know , might have a job as a special agent. ReplyDeleteOne of the chapters of the book by Michael Smith is devoted to the espionage activities in Russia of the famous writer Somerset Maugham. He was recruited by British intelligence in 1915 and sent to neutral Switzerland as a resident. Switzerland during the war was a nest of international espionage. Maugham later described his Swiss adventures in the short story collection Ashenden, or the British Agent. In September 1917, Maugham was sent on a special mission to Petrograd with the task of preventing a possible Russian withdrawal from the war, promising the Provisional Government significant military and financial assistance, and preventing the Bolsheviks from coming to power. Maugham repeatedly met with Alexander Kerensky, who promised to fight to the bitter end, and received a message from him for the British government. In his report on the situation in Russia, the writer noted that Kerensky's power is as strong as ever, and that the Bolsheviks are unlikely to ever come to power. Michael Smith considers Maugham's mission a failure.
